Cre\u0219terea mobilitatii personale a creat noi oportunitati economice, sociale si de agrement. Dar beneficiile de mobilitate au fost insotite de riscuri dramatice noi. Automobilele au adus viteze mari de deplasare direct pe mana oameniilor. La inceputul secolului al XX-lea, o rata in crestere a deceselor in urma accidentelor in trafi a starnit interesul. Un dialog intre medici, avocati, ingineri de siguranta, jurnalisti \u0219i altele au dezvaluit opinii diferite cu privire la cauzele accidentelor cu leziuni sau decese. Comportamentul soferului, designul auto, ingineria autostrazilor si pericolele de trafic toate au fost invinuite. Eforturile de a pastra avantajele mobilitatii si eliminarea riscurilor care duc la producerea accidentelor prin diverse mijloace, de la controlarea comportamentului conducatorilor auto pana la modificarea designului autoturismelor si adaugarea diverselor elemente mai sigure in productia acestora.
